The Downtown Lansing Library is 50 this year! All are invited to celebrate the library’s anniversary at 401 S. Capitol on Sunday, Sept. 28.*

virginia and erinIn 1964, Virginia Summers was the head of the Reference department and had worked at the library since 1929. She was instrumental in the push for the new building and was also a key figure in the creation of the Local History room. In 2014, Erin B. is the Digital Literacy Librarian. She helps patrons and staff with all of our wonderful digital services such as eBooks and eAudiobooks. Erin continues the great tradition of librarians helping, 85 years after Virginia began her career!

In 1964, the library had just one card catalog (divided between two floors) tocatalog and tablet locate items. Soon it became apparent that this wasn’t practical, so the entire catalog was duplicated so that each floor had its own. 2014: You can access the catalog 24/7 from any device connected to the web. In addition to viewing and requesting items, you can check your record, pay fines and even get a temporary library card.

music listeningIn 1964, the library loaned LP records for the first time. You could even preview them at the groovy listening station. 2014: You can check out CDs and someday even stream music from the library.

In 1964, the library loaned films for the first time. 2014: You can checkfilmsdvd out DVDs and someday even stream movies and TV shows from the library.

falloutwirelessIn 1964, the library was an official fallout shelter. (You can still see the signs on the walls today.) 2014: Fallout shelter buildings had to have thick walls, which made wireless connections in our basement and mezzanine a challenge! Brian from IT prevailed, and wireless works well all over the building.
